SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 16.88 g, 10 h), circa 440-430. Charioteer driving fast quadriga to left, holding kentron in his right hand and reins with both; above, Nike flying right to crown the driver with a wreath; in exergue, ketos to left. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Head of Arethousa to right, her hair tied into a bun at the top of her head, wearing double spiral earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer - (V296/R407; unlisted die combination). HGC 2, 1315. Jameson 774 (same reverse die). SNG ANS 197 (same reverse die). Lightly toned and with a lovely, youthful head of Arethousa. Minor roughness on the obverse and a small die break on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
